Seven Spiders Spinning
(pb)
Seven baby Siberian snow spiders, frozen since the Ice Age, defrost on their way to a science lab. They wake up in a wood where the Tattletales girls club are planning for the school Halloween Horror Pageant ...
'bristles with originality and cleverness also, though it is cleverness which, overall, is used in the service of humour rather than seriousness ... It is a storyline which could easily fall into whimsy, but Maguire's insight into the child's mind and his ability to convey that insight in dialogue that sparkles with wit ensure that bathos is kept at bay. There is, as he knowingly says at one point, 'rare spiderish emotion, not seen much outside the best of children's books': but there is as well a wise understanding of young inquisitive minds, of gender differences and of that curious process called education.'

Four Stupid Cupids
(pb)
Strange happenings are afoot and the Copycats and Tattletales are in the thick of things once again! When four inept cupids from Ancient Greece send one arrow after another into the wrong target, there are hilarious results...
'A satisfying read which is funny, fast, complex and to be recommended'
School Librarian
'I found myself warming to Maguire's charm. Nine to twelve year olds probably will as well.'
Books Ireland
'Maguire's lively writing allows you to picture things clearly. Four Stupid Cupids is highly enjoyable, great fun and a tender, shy final page reminds us: "To kids, love seems sort of stupid. But once you realise what it is, it seems like the smartest thing on earth.".'
The Irish Times
'This is a funny and endearing story for children in the middle years ... the entire story is permeated with affection.'
