The Guns of Easter (pb)
It is 1916 and Europe is at war. From the poverty of the Dublin slums twelve-year-old Jimmy Conway is pulled between the British Army and the rebels in the Easter Rising.

Praise for The Guns of Easter
'This book is excellant and the details are very accurate and factual. I really enjoyed it and felt very connected to the young children of 1916' Catriona
'Whelan immerses readers in a harsh, yet poignant, journey that finds Jimmy learning much about the Irish people, his family, and most important, himself. The exciting plot moves effortlessly, enhanced by plenty of details to add character depth and historical context, and Whelan wisely avoids both extreme tragedy and overzealous triumph. The result is a fine adventure, with some realistic, genuinely heart-tugging twists.' Roger Leslie, Booklist
'We sweat it out with Jimmy as he confronts horror at every turn. Physically and emotionally in a no-man's land, the boy's perceptions of good men killing one another leave him more scarred than any bullets.' Tribune Magazine
'A striking first novel endowed with a strong sense of the conflicting passions of the time. Some of the scenes are as searing as anything in O'Casey's trilogy' Children's Books in Ireland
'A sensitive portrayal of a boy's forced and traumatic emergence into adolescence' Books Ireland
'A fine, humane anti-war novel which young people will relish' Books Ireland
'An impressive first novel' The Sunday Independent

Out of Nowhere (pb)
A young boy wakes up in a strange location remembering only his name, and with all evidence of the outside world seemingly erased. What has happened? A sci-fi fantasy from this award-winning author.

Praise for Out of Nowhere
'enthralling thriller with a great twist at the end' The Observer
'This is science fiction with a strong allegorical element to it. It is also fun.' Children's Books in Ireland
'Prepare to accept the fact that the world as you know it no longer exists...' Irish Independent
'Not for the faint hearted! This thriller, with its twists and turns is certainly one that kids will love to fear!' Parent & Teacher Magazine
'In this taut thriller Whelan has created an imaginatively eerie new world.' The Irish Times
'It makes the X-files look cosy.' RTE Guide
'By page ten I was so absorbed. This is an absorbing action-adventure story, but it's also a study of what it is to be human and how difficult it is to disentangle oneself from violence. It's far more imaginative and better written than most and its essential seriousness is undercut with humour. A damned good read, no matter what age you are.' Siobhán Parkinson, IT Magazine
'The sort of story to make your hair stand on end. It keeps its biggest surprise to the end --as all good thrillers do!' Southside People
'An excellent book ... I found myself intrigued by and drawn into the fascinating world that Whelan weaves around his characters. The frenetic pace keeps us constantly turning the pages.' Sunday Business Post
